📌 1. Gemling Twister Build Overview & Mechanics
Twister + Barrage Spear, straight from Korean streamer 대길이겨란 (Daegiligyeoran) Game Channel — updated for PoE 2 0.55 (Forbidden Rites). This Gemling Legionnaire spear build leans on
Twister and
Whirling Slash for clear, but a lot of players who just copy the skill list still feel weak against bosses. Nine times out of ten that’s gear order, not the build — so this guide is the exact buy order 대길이겨란 uses coming out of the campaign, cheapest and highest-impact first.
1. The Frost Wall + Verglas Life-Stacking Combo
- The entire build revolves around a single interaction:
Cast on Elemental Ailment triggering
Frost Wall. As of this patch, Frost Wall’s Quality bonus grants a massive amount of extra maximum Life to its Ice Crystals — pushing 20-23% Quality alone gets Frost Wall’s Ice Crystal Life into the hundreds of thousands with no other investment at all. - Here’s why that absurd Life number matters: Verglas, socketed on
Twister, doesn’t care that Ice Crystals exist — it triggers on destroying one, which happens automatically as Twister’s own projectile chews through a Frost Wall segment. Destroying an Ice Crystal this way grants Supported Skills (Twister) a buff that Gains a percentage of their Damage as extra Cold Damage for 6 seconds, equal to 1% per 2,000 maximum Life of the Ice Crystal you destroyed — not a flat “more Cold damage” multiplier. At roughly 180,000 Ice Crystal Life that’s already ~90% of your Attack Damage gained as extra Cold Damage for that 6-second window — more than you’d get from a fully corrupted Frost Flask. Push Ice Crystal Life further with Uhtred’s Augury on Cast on Elemental Ailment, corrupted implicits, or additional Frost Wall Quality, and even bigger Cold damage windows from Verglas are realistic. - Because this scales off Verglas’s own formula rather than anything you build into your character, it works even on a nearly empty passive tree and cheap gear — which is exactly why the budget path below focuses on cheap items first instead of a big single-target weapon.
2. Survivability: Virtuous Barrier + Charge Regulation
- The Gemling Legionnaire ascendancy grants
Virtuous Barrier through the Essence of Virtue notable — a Persistent buff that stacks up to 3 (plus 1 per Skill requiring that Attribute) Motes of each Attribute, granting Life, Armour/Evasion/ES and Life/Mana Regen per Mote while you have it active. It just sits on and quietly pads your defenses for free.
Charge Regulation is the other core defensive skill, granting more Crit Chance, more Armour/Evasion/ES, and more Skill Speed depending on which Charge you’re holding, at the cost of consuming one of each Charge every 10 seconds. It pairs with the Thaumaturgic Generator amulet augment (see Gear section) which passively refills your Power/Frenzy/Endurance Charges every 5 seconds.- The Advanced Thaumaturgy and Motoric Implants Gemling ascendancy notables (Gem Quality grants Socketed Skills an additional effect, and +2 to Level of all Skills with a Dexterity requirement respectively) are what let a cheap, low-quality gem setup already punch far above its currency cost — quality investment on Frost Wall and your core gems keeps paying off the whole way through this guide.
- The fourth ascendancy notable, Adaptive Capability, lets Attribute Requirements of Gems be satisfied by your single highest Attribute instead of each one separately. Since this build only actually needs enough Dexterity and Intelligence to wear its gear and gems, that frees you to dump every other passive point into Strength for the flat Life it grants.
3. The Righteous Descent Weapon-Swap Trick
Righteous Descent isn’t a native ascendancy skill — it’s simply the unique Grand Spear The Ordained‘s own built-in skill, and that same weapon also creates a Fragment of Divinity in your Presence every 4 seconds. Since Righteous Descent consumes a nearby Fragment of Divinity to become Empowered (dealing far more damage and refunding Life/Mana), simply holding The Ordained on your second weapon set keeps a free, massively upgraded burst attack on a 10-second cooldown available at all times.- Weapon Set 1 stays a plain rare spear (an Attack Speed roll is ideal here) for your bread-and-butter Spear Throw/
Twister/
Whirling Slash attacks; Weapon Set 2 pairs The Ordained with your off-hand Sceptre and is only for swapping in to fire off an Empowered Righteous Descent, then swapping back. This is an endgame-tier addition — skip it entirely on the no-budget path below and just use Spear Throw normally on both sets.
4. Budget-First Upgrade Path
- This guide is written in the order 대길이겨란 actually recommends spending currency coming out of the campaign, cheapest and highest-impact first: a 1c spear, then a 1c off-hand focus, then the Cast on Elemental Ailment + Frost Wall setup itself (skill only, free), then a cold ring, then the Thaumaturgic Generator amulet, then a better elemental spear, then the helmet last (the single most expensive piece). Every item below is meant to be replaced later — none of it is a “final” item, so don’t overspend on any single piece.
- Once that no-budget character is fully clearing content comfortably, the Endgame Upgrade Path (also in the Gear & Gem Setup section below) swaps in a corrupted rare/unique weapon pair, a re-crafted helmet and chest, and better boots — same skills, same core combo, just noticeably higher numbers across the board.
📊 2. Pros & Cons
Here’s the full rundown on why this Gemling Twister build is worth trying — and where it falls short.
Pros:
- Extremely cheap to get functional — the Verglas + Frost Wall Quality interaction gives a huge Cold damage boost from a single 1c-tier support gem setup, with almost no gear investment required.
- Fast, safe mapping:
Twister and
Whirling Slash clear packs from range while Virtuous Barrier and Charge Regulation passively cover your defenses without extra button presses. - Every gear slot in the early game is treated as disposable — you’re never locked into an expensive “must-have” unique to make the build function, which keeps the campaign-to-endgame transition cheap.
- Scales smoothly into a much stronger late build (better weapon, taming ring, helmet upgrade) without changing the core skill setup at all.
Cons:
- Single-target and boss damage lags behind clear speed until you invest in the later weapon and Barrage/Salvo upgrades — the #1 complaint from people who tried this build off a skill list alone.
- The Cast on Elemental Ailment + Frost Wall interaction is non-obvious and easy to set up wrong (wrong support order, missing Quality) if you’re not following a guide closely.
🎒 3. Gear & Gem Setup
Everything below is the no-budget entry path for this Gemling Twister build — real items 대길이겨란 bought and equipped right after finishing the campaign, roughly in spending order. None of these are “Core Unique Items” you need to chase; they’re all regular rare-base items with specific mods to search for, and every single one gets replaced later. Prices are what they sold for at the time of the guide and will vary.
Buy in this order:
- 1. Weapon (Spear): The unique Spire of Ire (Helix Spear) is the pickup 대길이겨란 uses right when hitting endgame — cheap this early into a league (~1c), and its built-in Chaos Damage conversion and Life Leech make it a big step up over whatever campaign spear you’re still holding. If it’s not cheap or available on your realm, any budget rare spear works as a stand-in at this stage — the specific rolls don’t matter much this early. Don’t skip straight to a better spear; this is the fastest first upgrade.
- 2. Off-Hand (Sceptre/Focus): The starter focus item (~1c) — search for the same rock-bottom budget tier, you’ll replace it soon.
- 3. Skill Setup: Socket
Cast on Elemental Ailment with
Frost Wall — this costs no currency at all and is the single biggest damage source in the entire build (see Mechanics above). Push Frost Wall’s Quality as high as you can afford Gemcutter’s Prisms for; every point matters. - 4. Ring: The unique Polcirkeln (Sapphire Ring, ~3-4c) — its built-in “Enemies Chilled by your Hits can be Shattered as though Frozen” mod converts your permafreeze uptime into free crowd control and synergizes with the Combat Frenzy Charge generation. Any budget-tier copy works; corruption or an enchant is a later upgrade, not something to require when buying.
- 5. Body Armour: The unique The Brass Dome (Champion Cuirass, later upgraded to its Runeforged version) — an Elemental Resistance downside roll keeps this one cheap (~10c) since most buyers avoid it. Prioritize the highest Rune count you can afford, then socket Warding Rune of Reinforcement for Runic Ward — this build has no dedicated Life/Armour layer, so Runic Ward here is effectively your only extra damage-mitigation buffer. Treat this as fully disposable; the 3 and 4-socket upgrades come later.
- 6. Amulet — the Thaumaturgic Generator: The most important defensive item in the build. Buy a Solar Amulet base with at least +13 Spirit and +2 to Level of all Projectile Skills (~1c), then socket it with the Thaumaturgic Generator augment at the Withered Willow. This passively grants a Power, Frenzy, or Endurance Charge every 5 seconds based on your socketed gems’ Attribute requirements — Intelligence gems weight toward Power Charges, Dexterity toward Frenzy, and Strength toward Endurance (gems in your off-hand weapon-swap set still count). To unlock the instill slot you need Elder Maddox’s Withered Willow quest (defeat 5 Delirium-affected map bosses), then socket Potent Liquid Melancholy, Liquid Disgust, and Concentrated Liquid Isolation — in that order — into the Decanter of Madness along with the amulet.
- 7. Weapon Upgrade: Once you have a bit more currency, replace the starter spear with a rare spear (~1div) rolled for Critical Hit Chance, three lines of elemental damage added to Attacks (Fire/Cold/Lightning), and Elemental Damage % on Attack Skills — this feeds more reliable Cast on Elemental Ailment triggers and raw
Twister/
Whirling Slash damage. - 8. Helmet: The unique Alpha’s Howl (Armoured Cap, later upgraded to its Runemastered version), rolled with +100 Spirit (~6-7div, the single most expensive piece in this budget path) plus good Fire/Cold Resistance. The extra Spirit is what lets you keep
Cast on Elemental Ailment and
Profane Ritual active on both weapon sets at once instead of just one, which also keeps your Energy for Righteous Descent topped up passively. - 9. Attack Speed Spear — buy last: A plain magic-rarity spear with an Attack Speed roll around 25% (~7-8c) is enough — you don’t need a unique here. If you’d rather have one, the unique Skysliver (Winged Spear) is solid value for the price — trades away Physical Damage for a strong Lightning Damage and Attack Speed roll, plus a chance to Shock.
Rest of the Gear
No special search criteria here — just decent rares.
- Second Ring: Any budget rare — accuracy, added Physical/Cold damage, Dexterity, Chaos Resistance, and Physical Leech are all fine. No specific base or corruption needed here.
- Boots (Leggings): Whatever “Secured Leggings”-type boots you carried out of the campaign are fine to keep using here — no need to buy new ones yet.
- Gloves: Any rare gloves with an Attack Speed roll. Socket the Idol of Sirrius Augment in the Gloves’ Augment Socket for 8% increased Attack Speed once Resistances are capped.
- Belt: A budget rare belt with 2 Charm Slots, Armour, Life, and Fire/Chaos Resistance. No special unique is needed at this budget tier.
- Jewels: Plain Emerald-type jewels rolled for 4 of: Attack Damage %, Projectile Damage %, Projectile Speed %, Spear Attack Damage %, Attack Critical Hit Chance %, Critical Damage Bonus %, Spear Attack Speed %, or Attack Speed %. Price scales with how many of those you demand at once — 4 rolled mods is the sweet spot for this budget.
Optional upgrade (skip for now if budget is tight): The unique Heart of the Well Diamond is a step up once you can afford one — its two desecrated mod slots make it noticeably pricier than a plain Emerald, so it’s not part of the no-budget setup. Best roll to look for: Cold and Lightning Extra Damage plus Attack Speed and Mana Recovery on Kill. If you’re stretching your budget, Extra Damage plus Mana on Kill alone is still a solid pick that keeps paying off into the endgame.
Endgame Upgrade Path
Once the no-budget Gemling Twister setup above is comfortable, these are the exact upgrades that take it into full endgame mapping and bossing. Amulet, second ring, gloves and belt stay the same as the budget list above — only the pieces below change.
- Weapon Set 1 (attack-speed spear — default set): Blight Edge (Soaring Spear base, rare) — a rare spear rolled for Attack Speed, Physical Damage, and Accuracy, with 2 Runes (Serle’s Triumph + Soul Core of Quipolatl) adding further Attack Speed and Accuracy, corrupted with +1 allowed Suffix Modifier. This is your normal attacking weapon set for Spear Throw,
Twister, and
Whirling Slash — the one you stay on by default. - Weapon Set 2 (main dealing weapon — swap in for burst): The Ordained (Grand Spear, Unique) — grants Spear Throw and Level 19 Righteous Descent, with strong Physical and Lightning Damage rolls plus a chance to gain extra Charges. Socketed with Saqawal’s Rune of the Sky for Critical Hit Chance, Life Leech, and — the key line — creates a Fragment of Divinity in your Presence every 4 seconds, which is what keeps Righteous Descent permanently Empowered. This spear is paired with the Sacred Flame Sceptre below in the same weapon set — swap to this set, fire Righteous Descent, swap back.
- Off-Hand (Sceptre — equipped on Weapon Set 2 alongside The Ordained): Sacred Flame (Shrine Sceptre) — grants Level 19 Purity of Fire and 100 Spirit outright, with a Presence aura that adds Fire Damage and Life Regeneration for you and nearby allies, and makes nearby enemies resist Elemental Damage based on their lowest Resistance. This is the direct upgrade of the ~1c starter focus from the budget list.
- Helmet: a re-crafted Alpha’s Howl (Runemastered Armoured Cap) — same core item as the budget-path helmet, pushed further with a Raven-Touched base and a Raven-Touched Shard rune for extra Spirit, Cold Resistance, and a doubled Presence Radius (which extends the Sacred Flame sceptre’s aura range too).
- Body Armour: a re-crafted The Brass Dome (Runeforged Champion Cuirass) — same base as the budget chest, now with 3 Rune sockets: a Fox Idol (Bonded: +5% Quality of all Skills — this alone boosts every Quality-scaling effect in the build, including Frost Wall’s Ice Crystal Life) plus two Warding Runes of Reinforcement for a large Runic Ward and Armour boost, corrupted for Take no Extra Damage from Critical Hits.
- Boots: Not a fixed chase item here — whatever rare Runeforged boots you pick up covering your still-missing Resistances, or with a high Rune-base for extra Runic Ward, works fine. Resistance + Movement Speed rolls are also a solid pick. Direct upgrade of the campaign leggings from the budget list.
🔮 4. Full Skill List
This is the complete, endgame-target skill and support gem setup for the Gemling Twister build. If you’re still on the no-budget gear above, use the early-game swaps noted inline until you can afford the upgrades.
Virtuous Barrier
—
Cannibalism,
Clarity.
Spear Throw
— your default attack on both weapon sets (granted by both Blight Edge and The Ordained in the endgame weapon setup), no supports.
Righteous Descent
—
Second Wind III,
Cooldown Recovery II,
Rapid Attacks III. Granted by the endgame Weapon Set 2 unique The Ordained (see Gear & Gem Setup); early budget can skip this slot entirely until you have that weapon.
Purity of Ice /
Purity of Fire
— run whichever resistance aura your gear is short on; neither is a damage skill, both are pure Resistance auras. No supports needed.
Charge Regulation
— no supports, see Mechanics section above for how it works with the Thaumaturgic Generator amulet.
Explosive Spear +
Disengage
— not actually cast in combat; these two are slotted purely as filler in the bonus skill slots below. 대길이겨란’s stated reason for picking Dexterity-related skills here: it raises how often Frenzy Charges stack up.
— Free Skill Slots (optional): buy a single Unset Ring (~1c, grants +1 Skill Slot) — you only need one, not two. Equip it in one ring slot and socket Explosive Spear into the new slot, then move the same ring to your other ring slot and socket Disengage there. Swap back to your normal rings afterward — thanks to a still-unpatched bug, the slots and gems stay active. (Further, optional: anointing your amulet with Augmented Flesh — Liquid Emotions: Potent Liquid Contempt + Concentrated Liquid Suffering ×2 — opens 2 more slots the same way, but the reagents are pricey, so only bother if you have currency to spare.)
Whirling Slash
—
Rapid Attacks III,
Rage III,
Knockback,
Magnified Area II,
Rigwald’s Ferocity (endgame addition — leave this support off until you’ve got a spare Lineage slot).
— Budget tip: this gem has to stay at Level 1 — not just when convenient, mandatory. Its mana cost scales from just 5 Mana at Level 1 up to 39 Mana at Level 20, and once your Attack Speed scales up later in the build your mana pool can’t keep up with it past Level 1. The trick 대길이겨란 uses: level a disposable throwaway character just far enough to pick up a Level 1 copy (an Uncut Skill Gem works), stash it without ever socketing it into combat so it never gains experience, then move it over to your Gemling Legionnaire and socket it there. If you accidentally let it level up, there’s no undoing it — you’ll need to start an entirely new throwaway character just to fish out another Level 1 copy, so handle this one carefully.
Cast on Elemental Ailment — linked to
Frost Wall,
Glacier,
Cold Mastery,
Uhtred’s Augury (early budget: use
Boundless Energy II here instead until you can afford this), and
Profane Ritual as a secondary triggered skill. This is the core damage combo — see Mechanics above.
Combat Frenzy
—
Charge Profusion II.
Twister
— main clear skill.
Verglas,
Deliberation,
Projectile Acceleration III,
Stoicism II,
Salvo (early budget: just run Verglas + Deliberation until you have more support gem slots to fill).
— Heads up on Salvo: it scatters extra projectiles, which is great damage but easy to whiff with if your aim/positioning isn’t precise — a miss can leave you exposed, especially in boss fights. 대길이겨란 only recommends it once your damage and defenses are already solid; if you’re still squishy or lower level, skip it for now.
Barrage
—
Efficiency II,
Heightened Charges,
Cooldown Recovery II,
Perpetual Charge,
Olroth’s Conviction.
— Budget tip: swap the last slot for a fifth generic support until you have a spare Runic Ward pool on your chest piece.
Trinity —
Cold Mastery.
Herald of Ice —
Elemental Armament II,
Magnified Area II,
Ambush,
Living Lightning II.
Remnants of Kalguur —
Remnant Potency III,
Harmonic Remnants II,
Khatal’s Rejuvenation.
Note on weapon swap: Spear Throw stays unsupported on both sets — just your default attack no matter which spear’s out. The whole point of swapping is Righteous Descent on Weapon Set 2 (see Mechanics/Gear above); everything else about your setup doesn’t change between sets.

💬 6. Author's Notes
- Investment & Time Cost: Genuinely cheap to get running — the no-budget path above (Noble's Spire spear, starter focus, Sapphire ring, Thaumaturgic Generator amulet) is almost entirely 1-4 chaos per item, with the Alpha's Howl helmet as the one real spike at ~6-7 divine. The endgame path (Blight Edge + The Ordained weapon pair, re-crafted Alpha's Howl and The Brass Dome, Sacred Flame sceptre) is a much bigger jump in currency, but nothing here is mandatory to clear content comfortably — it's purely a "spend more, get more" upgrade path on top of an already-functional cheap build.
- In-Game Performance: Clear speed is excellent from the moment Cast on Elemental Ailment + Frost Wall + Verglas comes online — that single interaction carries most of the build's Cold damage for next to no investment. Single-target and boss damage starts out as the build's weak point, but improves substantially once Explosive Spear and the Weapon Set 2 Righteous Descent burst (via The Ordained) are online.
- Survivability & Room to Upgrade: Defense stacks passively through Virtuous Barrier's Mote system and Charge Regulation's per-Charge bonuses, backed by a large Runic Ward pool from The Brass Dome once you're on the endgame chest. From here, the natural next upgrades are a Taming-style ring (not yet itemized on this character), a Heart of the Well jewel in place of a plain Emerald, and pushing Frost Wall's Quality and Ice Crystal Life even further for more free Cold damage through Verglas.
